Lift Safety
and Regulatory Resources
These links connect our visitors to
various organizations and regulations that Adaptive Engineering
Inc. references when designing our equipment. The commentary and
links below are intended to provide helpful information;
however, visitors should not rely on this information in place
of current, independent legal advice. Nor should this
information be viewed as a comprehensive review of all relevant
regulations or requirements. Where links change, we apologize
for any inaccuracy.
Americans With Disabilities Act &
Public Building Lifts
The ADA sets out
expectations related to access. The detail around compliance
with those expectations is set out in ADAAG. In turn, ADAAG
references other legislation that is specifically related to the
access issue of concern. In the case of wheelchair lifts, ADAAG
states that lifts will comply with the ASME Code.
The
regulations in the ASME code are aimed at permanently installed
powered lifts and elevators. The ASME regulations specifically
state that they do not apply to portable wheelchair lifts.
As a
portable wheelchair lift used to provide temporary access, the
Adaptive wheelchair lifts for public buildings are exempt from
the ASME code and meet all requirements of the ADA for temporary
access lifts.
Americans With
Disabilities Act & Residential Lifts
The ADA does not
apply to lifts used in private residences.
Americans With
Disabilities & Railway Lifts
ADAAG states
that the Department of Transportation will set regulations
related to access and wheelchair lifts related to Railways.
These regulations can be found in 49 CFR 38.
The
Adaptive wheelchair lift fully complies with these
transportation regulations.
Regulations Related to Aircraft Lifts
ADAAG
states that the Department of Transportation will set
regulations related to access and wheelchair lifts related to
aircraft. These regulations cover aviation ground support
equipment, refer to Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 1247 General Requirements
for Aerospace Ground Service Equipment, Motorized and
Non-motorized.
The
Adaptive wheelchair lift fully complies with these aviation
regulations.
European Lifts
Portable, manually powered wheelchair lifts that have a maximum
lifting height of less than 2 metres must be in compliance with
the EU Machinery Directive.
Adaptive’s portable lifts are manufactured in compliance with
this directive and carry the CE mark.
Lift Safety & Testing
All
Adaptive lifts conform to stringent safety requirements, with
each lift being factory load tested to 5 times the rated load.
The lifts are manufactured to exacting tolerances using aluminum
and stainless steel. Critical components have been tested
successfully for extreme weather performance from –50 degrees to
+130 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure low-cost, trouble-free use
that is safe
